CALL TO ACTION ALERT #1. Section 504 Disability Rights Advocacy STATUS : ACTIVE
UPDATE: This is still an active item. After the Amicus brief deadline February 24th, the court ordered the 17 states seeking to make section 504 unconstitutional file a Joint Status Report by April 21st. See the filing here.
The call to action is still active. Please continue to call your Attorney General AND if you know residents of other affected states, ask them to call their Attorney General and ask that they DROP OUT of this case.
Texas v. Becerra is a lawsuit involving 17 states who seek to fully disengage from Section 504 and all of its Disability access provisions, including its federal funding, claiming that it is unconstitutional. If the courts agree, individuals with disabilities will lose many of the basic rights protections they have had in place for 50 years.
It is critical that we take action now and tell our Attorney General to DROP OUT of this case

PTA Council Position Statement on 504 Protections Supporting Materials on 504
The Leander ISD Council of PTAs and our Delegation representing 10,000 members consisting of parents, students, teachers, business leaders and community members unanimously passed the Statement on 504 Protections. Our statement issues a call to action to advocate to the Texas State Attorney General that we are unified in our call for Texas to cease in their pursuit of the case Texas v. Bercerra. In this case, the state of Texas is leading the claim that Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is unconstitutional while seeking to strike Section 504 and end its protection for the disability community.
The Leander ISD Council of PTAs and our 10,000 members from 43 public school campuses in the Leander Independent School District represents the parent voice and community voice for our respective campuses. PTA is the largest child advocacy organization in the state of Texas. Students with disabilities are among our most vulnerable individuals in society and it is our collective duty to ensure their rights, well being and protection. Section 504 is a key component to student rights, well-being and protection. Removal, reduction, or roll back of those protections will cause direct harm to our disability population.
We are happy to meet directly with the Texas State Attorney General to voice our concerns make sure that there is clear understanding of the actual impact Section 504 has to our students.
